"Greater love hath no man than this, that he would lay down his life for his brothers."Aug 26, 20211 min readEighteen months without an American servicemember casualty in Afghanistan, then we have 12 today. Equivalent to a squad of Marines and their Corpsman. Many of us are feeling this loss particularly grievously, and the deafening silence where there should be response causes us no end of rage and sadness, in equal measure. Regardless of your beliefs, regardless of your politics, there are 12 families who must now put to rest a treasured son who gave his life trying to save those of others. These men died honorably, in pursuit of the safety and liberty of others, and we do not need to stand upon their bodies for the sake of political points, but we do need to respond. We know this is an extremely difficult time for a significant portion of the veteran community; many of our staff, myself included, have walked those lands and seen the people there, have given of ourselves time we can never reclaim so that they may have a chance at a better future. Do not keep your thoughts to yourself. Reach out to your friends, your brothers, your sisters, your mentors, and keep the poisons of the mind from gaining hold during this dark time.
