As hard as it is to take the long view when you are seeing the chaos and devastation in Afghanistan, it's what we need to do. Within some of those still there, the fire of freedom was lit. It may have to be banked for now but there will still be stories told in the dark, of freedom and the kindnesses of the men and women who gave it to them, if only for a time. In a generation or two or three, the banked fire may blaze up and burn away the Taliban and others like them. Be proud and grateful that you had a hand in lighting that fire.
It wasn't for nothing. No good or positive action is ever a waste. We may not see anything put the pain and misery that is overtaking Afghanistan now but lasting good has come of it and more will come in the future.
