Look, WE know that this isn't any kind of celebration or festive occasion. It's a remembrance and a memorial, hence the name, of those of our brothers and sisters and children who didn't make it back or who fell here. However, a lot of people either don't know or don't understand what it means to us but they don't mean any harm or to be disrespectful when they wish us or others a "happy Memorial Day" and most are genuinely sincere when they thank us for our service. YOU know what it means and it's not about being a superior jackass to anyone. So, just smile or nod or say, "You're welcome, thank you for your support" and continue on your way and observe this weekend in whatever way you choose.
